Appearance
If you are wanting a unique and charming housepet, consider the "Frenchie". They are wonderful stubborn little clowns who will steal your heart. Average lifespan is 12 to 14 years, and weight should ideally be around 12 kgs. Frenchies come in a variety of colours including brindle, pied (brindle & white) and fawn. History
Around 1850 -1860, English Lacemakers of Nottingham left for France to continue their trade. They took with them their "toy" or miniature British Bulldogs because of the dog's compact size and companionship and their ratting abilities. These miniature bulldogs are thought to have been crossed with Terriers and Pugs, and the French Bulldog evolved. French Bulldogs quickly became very popular in France, firstly among the "Ladies of the Night" in Paris, and then as a status symbol of French society. Their popularity continued throughout France, America, England and Germany, and the development of the unique large bat ears at the turn of the century was due largely to American breeders. French Bulldogs continue to be a much sought after breed, and availability is limited, so be prepared to wait for your special little "frog dog".
Temperament
They are bred solely as companion dogs, and thrive on love and attention.
If you are seeking an active partner for jogging and other sports, then a French Bulldog is not for you.
Care / Grooming
Frenchies require minimal grooming and excercise, and they seldom bark. French Bulldogs are not good swimmers and must be supervised around swimming pools.
Health
Being a Brachycephalic (flat faced) breed, French Bulldogs are more prone to heat stress. It is therefore imprerative that your French Bulldog be kept cool during hot weather
